Hario Skerton Coffee Grinder

In this age of instant gratification and “fast this, fast that”, you may think who in their right mind would want a hand grinder.
Well, good question.  Take fast food for instance.  Yes, you may get a good meal at a good price but for the same money and a little bit of patience, you can have a great meal at home.  It really boils down to what your needs are.
What are you looking for? Fast coffee or great coffee?
If you are looking for fast coffee, this is not for you but if you are interested in great coffee, then you are in for a treat!

Hario Skerton manual coffee mill

The Hario Skerton Manual Coffee Grinder is not fast compared to electric grinders and it’s price may be about the same as some electric blade grinders.  However, what you get for this price is a well built manual coffee mill that does not chop the beans but grind as a ‘grinder’ should do.  This manual grinder grinds?  Yes, the Skerton manual grinder is a ceramic conical burr grinder.  Because of this and its built quality, it produces a consistent grounds. You will not find as much powder and larger bits in your grounds compared to a blade grinder or cheaper electric burr grinders.

Why else should you get the Hario Skerton grinder or any other manual coffee grinder?

Here are a few reasons:
  1. Quality – Consistent fine settings. Can be adjusted to such fine grounds that it will choke an espresso machine.
  2. Price – Compared to good entry level electric burr grinder, the Hario Skerton is value for money. It has good reviews and is one of the few affordable and trusted brands in hand grinder.
  3. Economical – Since it is manual, you save on electricity and at the same time get a little bit of arm workout.
  4. Compact – It does not take up much counter space and can be store away easily in a drawer or a corner of your kitchen cabinet.
  5. Mobile – Since it is compact and manual, you can take it on your travels.
  6. Easy maintenance – it can be taken apart easily for cleaning.
Does it have any disadvantage?
Nothing is perfect and this is true of the Hario Skerton coffee grinder. Here are some that I can think of:
  1. You have to work for your cup of coffee
  2. It has an open hopper, so depending on how careful you are, beans may spill while you grind.  This an easy problem to solve and I leave it up to your creativity to tackle it.
  3. Consistency suffers a little when grind setting is course.

Despite the few disadvantages, overall, the Hario Skerton manual coffee grinder is value for money.
